Born To Run
I've been listening to Born To Run for about a month during my runs. I'm sure I've mentioned before that the entire first hour is basically a list of all the reasons a person should not run. Then it takes you on a montage of stories about incredible and slightly unbelievable runners that compete in 100 mile ultra marathons in the desert, or up a mountain. I'm about 3/4 of the way through and the author is explaining a few pretty foreign concepts to most of us. The first, and probably most outlandish, is the idea of the barefoot runner. I wouldn't do it justice, so if you think it sounds interesting you will need to research it yourself, or read this book to find out the details. The other thing is about diet. There are all these new style running trainers that are preaching, "eat like you are poor" as the basis of their nutritional advice. A lot of what I'm hearing makes sense in some weird way. The barefoot thing is really interesting and I'm very tempted to give it a shot. At the very least I'm going to try some short runs once it gets a little warmer over at the park, on the grass, barefoot. My buddy Dave says that my next step from there is to move to Seattle and live in a tree.

The Road To Recovery
Our ward had a basketball game Thursday night, so I decided to see how my body would react to a little physical activity. It was mostly a blowout, so I didn't play very much. It was nice to get out and move a little, but my legs were not back yet. Friday night is indoor soccer and I really enjoy playing with the guys from work, so I suited up and told Arturo (our coach) that I could only play here and there. He played me about 10 minutes each half. I scored on a penalty kick when the game was already out of hand. All my guys are hispanic and good soccer players. I'm the only non-spanish speaker on the team. I think my guys area always trying to help me score so I'll continue to sponsor the team. It's working. My legs felt good the entire game and I didn't have any swelling in either knee after the game. That is all good news. After school today I went for a quick 4 mile run to make sure everything is back to normal. My knee was a little sore, but I was able to run the last 1.5 miles in just over 12 minutes, which is very fast for me.
Now that my body doesn't hurt all the time, I'm starting to think that I'm a little disappointed in my performance in the race. I keep thinking that if I didn't cramp up at 16.5 that I would have finished under 5 hours easily and I would feel good about that time. I'm thinking seriously about running another one. The Utah Valley Marathon has the fastest average times of any in Utah, so I'm thinking it must be the easiest. If there is such thing as an easy marathon anyway. It's on June 11th. The other possibility would be the Deseret Morning News Marathon on July 24th. I'd rather get it over with sooner rather than later, so we'll see. Christy and Dan may run the Salt Lake Half Marathon, so I might join them for that one. It should be a good maintenance run.

Pictures
I bought a couple of pictures from the course photographer.
Notice the look of pure joy on my face in the top picture. That was taken at mile 3, on a particularly nasty hill. It didn't phase me one bit. I had that same smile on my face until mile 16 or so. The smile returned when I entered the finish line lane. It is hard to tell if I am praying or clapping...I'm pretty sure it was both. You can see Dan on the left side of the picture. He walked back to about 25.5 and walked with me for a half mile or so. You can also see the guy that finished right after me. He looks like he is only a little bit behind me, but it took him almost 8 more minutes to finish. The desert is deceptive.

Missions Accomplished
She must have been in her early 20's and she looked around at everyone else to see if they had solved this mind boggling puzzle. It must have been a little discouraging to see the 4-year old boy sitting next to her with his seat belt securely fastened at his waist. After a few minutes of rubbing the metal of the buckles together (maybe she thought they were magnetic) and repeating what sounded like magic words (she may have been swearing, but she was not speaking english) she leaned over and asked the guy in front of Dave for help. The dude must have thought she was joking. Imagine the conversation.
The girl, holding up two ends of a seat belt saying, "Excuse me, how does this work?" The guy looking back and noticing the seat belt and thinking, "this must be a joke. Is she coming on to me? Are there cameras around?" Finally he realizes she is serious and slowly shows her the magic of the seat belts coming together.
All this time I was laughing so hard tears were coming to my eyes. The whole time I was thinking, "this is why those stewardesses continue to demonstrate this small miracle. The best part was after she was securely fastened and the stewardesses were going over the seatbelt and life jacket routine, this girl was talking on her phone. No wonder she doesn't know how to do it. I'm not sure what asian country she was from, but I can guarantee they do not have seat belts in that country. She continued to talk on her phone until she lost her signal in the air. The gift of laughter was awesome.
Of course, what comes around goes around. The next funny event came at Dan's expense. I rented the first hotel room, so Dan rented the car and Dave got the second hotel room. As we were standing at the rental counter the lady asked Dan if he wanted insurance for the car. She was pressing him pretty hard to get it, so I stepped in and told him that he did not need any insurance because his own would cover him. Well, I guess she was more convincing than me because she talked Dan into getting his insurance by telling him that he "needed it". She even said, "You really do need this, I promise." I didn't say "I promise." I guess I should have. So, after doubling the price of the car with insurance, she convinced him to go with the "cheaper" gas solution too. "If you prepay for the gas, you just bring the car back empty and we take care of it." Of course, what they forget to mention is that no one uses a full tank of gas in one day. Sure enough, by the time we were done, we almost used half the tank. Dan was a good sport about it. We arranged to only tease him for one year, with a player option for a second year.
So, we took our minivan to Sports Authority to load up on goo and get a fanny pack for Dave. They had all the stuff we needed, so we next went for Dinner. It was about 6:00 by now, so we were all pretty hungry. Dave saw an Applebees and said that sounded good. Once we got in the restaurant we didn't see anything that looked like a good pre-race meal, so we left and headed to Whole Foods to eat at their salad and fresh pasta bar. We ate well and loaded up on food for the morning. We made one last stop at a gas station to get drinks and some candy for the run and set out for Death Valley. Unfortunately, we got lost several times trying to find each of these places, so it was almost 9:30 before we made it out of Vegas. We arrived at our hotel at almost 11:00. We were all very tired. Dave and Dan forgot to bring ear plugs, so they had to listen to my deep breathing all night. I slept like a baby until about 4:30 in the morning. I drank so much water throughout Friday and that resulted in an early morning wake up. I went back to sleep until 6:00 and then showered and got ready to run.
I bought a bandana at the general store at the Furnace Creek Ranch. I didn't want my bald bead to burn during the race. I ate a Cliff Bar and a bagel before the race and got good and stretched out. It was about 40 degrees at start time, so I went with just a short sleeve shirt and my running shorts. There was about 500 people or less at the starting line, but only about 170 running the full marathon. The three of us started out together near the back of the pack and quickly found a good pace. I had read that you should divide the race into three 10's. The first ten miles you run slower than your desired pace. This keeps you from making a huge rookie mistake of using all your energy trying to stay with the pack. Your body tells you to go, but you have to control it and stay steady. We settle in around a 10:15 pace and I felt great. At about 2.5 miles the first of the half marathoners caught up to us. They started 10 minutes after us. This dude was flying. We were 23 minutes into our race, so he was only 13 and had already gone 2.5 miles. We saw him again on his way back about 3 miles later. The race was an out and back, so we go to see all the speedy half marathoners absolutely crushing it. There were some good runners in that group.
We made it out of the first aide station (which were every three miles) at about 31 minutes. I was real happy with our pace. Dan had gone ahead, but we caught up to him on a big hill. I was shocked at how many hills there were on this course. I had guessed that it would be mostly flat, but there were a couple of real beasts. The aide stations had gatorade, pretzels, trail mix, red vines and water. Plenty of good stuff. It was already getting warm, so I took a cup of gatorade and a cup of water. The food and drinks were all on the tables, so you kind of had to stop to get your stuff each time. No big deal. We headed out and I still felt great. The three of us stayed together almost until the 6 mile aide station. Then Dan left us. Dave and I made it to the second aide station at around 61 minutes, but we had some trouble getting our water bottles filled and our goos out, so we were there for almost 4 minutes. No big deal though, as I just wanted to finish the first 10 miles close to an hour and 50 minutes. We were still ahead of that pace. Around mile 7 Dave said he was struggling. We walked for a minute and then started up again, but then right after the aide station at mile 9 Dave told me to go ahead. He didn't sleep well the previous night and was about ready to just stop. Even though I felt bad about it, I left him and got back on my pace.
Dave's sister and her husband and her husband's brother all came down and ran in the various races. The brother is a Boston Qualifier and took 11th overall in this race. I saw him at mile 10. He was on his way back from the turnaround and was talking on the phone. As I said hi to him I heard Dave about 50 feet behind me and I thought he was back so I slowed my pace a bit. At mile 11 I couldn't see him anymore, so I just kept going. Dan passed me on his way back from the turn at 12.75 miles. I felt pretty good knowing I was less than a mile behind Dan and nothing really hurt on my body. I was right on my planned pace of 2:20 at the turn and I debated whether or not to go for 4:30 or not. I knew it would be tough, so I decided another 2:20 would be fine and I would be stoked to finish in 4:40. So I stuck to my plan and kept running at about 10:15, only stopping at aide stations. Between miles 14 and 15 I saw Dave and gave him an Aleve and kept going. At mile 16 my total time was 2:49 and with only 10 miles left I really thought 4:40 was going to be easy. 11 minute miles for 10 miles? No problem. About half way to mile 17 the tickle that had been in my left hamstring a mile earlier turned into a full blown cramp and almost took me to the ground. I had not even really let it sink in, but a mile or so earlier I noticed that my bandana was completely dry and I was not sweating anymore. I'm sure I was starting to get dehydrated. I stood there for about 2 minutes, trying to stretch it out, but it hurt really bad. I drank all the water I had left in my bottle and started walking. The intense pain went away after a few more minutes, so I started jogging again. 4:40 was still possible, but now it was going to be a challenge. About 400 yards before the aide station at 18, the cramp came back and really never left me again. I got to 18 at 3:20, meaning it took me 30 minutes to go those two miles. The rest of the race was much the same. I would take 100 steps and my hamstring would hurt so bad I would have to limp for a minute or so before doing that again. At mile 19 the race director pulled up beside me and asked if I wanted a ride back in. I told him no even though my body was screaming to be put out of its misery.
Dan walked back on the course to meet me. I saw him around the 25.5 mile mark. We walked together for about half a mile before I limp/jogged the final .2 miles and across the finish line. So it is a little funny. When this thing started I would have been overjoyed to finish in 5 hours 27 minutes. 16 miles into the race though, I was sure I would beat 4 hours 40 minutes. Several people asked me when I was planning to do my next race, thinking I had caught the marathon fever that some people get. My answer every time was, "Never." Two days later, my body still hurts bad enough that the answer is still the same, but I have to admit, there is a part of me that wonders what the race would have been like if I didn't cramp up. Training in 18 degree weather and then running in 60+ is a big deal. My lungs were never tested in this race, as the elevation was below sea level the entire time, but the heat really got to me.
So, there are a few things I would do differently if I ever did this again. First, I would choose a race that is close enough to drive to on race day. Next, I would chose a race that I could train for in warmer weather. Also, I would watch my diet much better and lose some weight. I think 170 pounds would have been a lot easier to haul around for 26 miles. I would also choose a race that didn't have a ton of up hill running. Since this was an out and back we got to go down the uphills and up the downhills on the way back, but the uphills seemed a lot harder than the benefit I got from the downhills. Finally, I would train a little longer than 16 weeks. One of the hardest parts of this was running again the week after a long run of 15 plus miles. Our training schedule never really let up on that. Maybe 24 weeks or something like that I guess. All of this is really just a waste of time though, because I am definitely never running another one...probably.

Final Run Before the Race
Charlotte was over at a friend's house last night when I got home from work, so I decided to take Isabel on my final training run. It was only a 3 mile run, so I figured pushing a two year old would be no big deal. Isabel had a blast. She talked the first two miles almost nonstop. She pointed out every car, every dog, all the trees and all the places that she knew. I just ran a mile and a half down vine street and then turned around and came back. The run back was a little windy and the temperature was dropping pretty fast. It was 37 degrees when we left and only 30 when we got back. I could tell Isabel's face was getting cold, but she was having too much fun to complain about it. After the two mile mark she started putting her hands to her face, I assume, to keep her cheeks warm. About 3/4 of a mile before we got home she fell asleep. It was a pretty bumpy ride, but she slept soundly all the way home. It was really cute. She was ready to go again as soon as she woke up and Charlotte was pretty jealous that she didn't get to go. I told Charlotte she can come next time I go running, which may be never. The only food I ate yesterday before my run was a small bowl of spaghetti. I wanted to be hungry while I ran, just to get a small feel for how parts of the race are going to be. I felt good though. My knee never really started to hurt and neither did my foot or back. I guess I am as ready as I will be. Now I just need to stay away from the chocolate and candy until after the race.

The Week of the Race
This is it. The last week before the race. I'm not sure I can adequately describe all the thoughts that are swirling around in my head. I think mostly I'm concerned about two things. Will I be able to get enough sleep this week, and what am I going to eat the night before, the morning of and during the race? I'm pretty confident that I will finish. 20 miles was very difficult, but it was cold, I demolished my entry way that morning and framed a couple of walls, and it was later in the day. I think I do my best running in the mornings.
I got a text from Dave on Saturday morning as I was sitting in class. He told me that he went out to run 8 miles and only made it 3 and then had to walk .6 and then he was just done. I thought he was messing around, so I made fun of him and told him that good runners need to have short memories like defensive backs and shooters, but it turns out that he was serious. He came out and ran 4 with me that night and was fine, but it did get me thinking that I might not be ready. I left Dave at 4 and ran another 4 and felt pretty good, but my knee started to hurt and my left foot started aching and really everything that has ever hurt during a run kind of flared up on me. I think it's all in my head though. Sunday morning, none of those things really bothered me and today (Monday) I feel really good.
I haven't lost a pound in the 16 weeks that I've been training. I may be the only person in history to stay at the same weight during marathon training. I actually thought I was getting fatter until I weighed in yesterday morning at exactly 197, which is what I weighed back in November. I do feel heavy though, so I did a cleanse yesterday and a salt water flush last night. I'll spare everyone the details of the flush, but if you've never tried it I highly recommend it. The thing I like most about cleansing is the fantastic sleep I get. I went to bed at 9:30 last night and slept like a baby until my alarm went off at 6:20 this morning. If I can do that every night this week, the race will be a whole lot easier. I've got an easy three miles to go tonight and a 2 mile walk on Thursday and then the race on Saturday. I'm really excited to get it over with so I have a little more time to do other things. Running long distances takes way too long.

3? Seriously?
I was a little surprised when I looked at the training schedule and saw I only had to run 3 miles on Monday. To think that we are almost to the race is a little nerve racking and short distances are yet another reminder that the race is just around the corner. Dave and I ran the three together with the intent to finish faster than 27 minutes. About a mile into the run, Dave tells me that the two most common mistakes people make on their taper weeks is running too far and running too fast. I thought that was funny because I was in the middle of running too fast. We finished the first mile and a half in 13 minutes and I took it a little easier on the way back and finished just over 27 minutes. My back hurt after the run, but my foot felt much better, which is really a pretty good trade for me. After some stretching at home my back loosened up and felt fine. It was a little warmer during the run than it has been. Somewhere around 40 degrees. I wore shorts and a long sleeve shirt. I was cold, but it felt nice to run without the weight of all those clothes.

An Easy 10
"How far are we going tomorrow?"

"It's funny to think of 10 miles as easy."
"Compared to 20...piece of cake."
And so went a conversation between Dave and I last Friday. I was so busy with work and school this last week that I didn't have time to run...at all. I did play in our basketball game on Thursday and played in a soccer game on Friday, but no long slow distances. I was hoping my body would be fully rested for the run, but the top of my left foot still hasn't healed from the 20 miler. It never hurts worse while I run, so I'm not too worried about it, but it is really annoying.
Dan and I did more work on my remodel all day on Saturday before our run. We have the floor pulled out, most of the demolition done, and now we have the two walls framed in. I need to have an electrician come before I can sheetrock, and then I'll find someone to tile the floor. Lizzy can do the painting and I found a guy that can refinish the hardwood floors in the family room and dining room. I've really only been working on this on the weeks I don't have school on Saturday, so it is a little slow going.
It was nice to get out and run again on Saturday. I did my best to keep up with Dave and Dan the first 5 miles, which we finished in about 47 minutes. The second half I stayed with Dave for about 2 miles and then he took off. I didn't see Dan for quite a while, then, with about 1/2 mile left I hear giant footprints behind me, coming on fast. I turned, expecting it to be a drunk guy with a knife, but instead it was a ninja, dressed all in black and running way too fast. They say that it takes a ninja to see a ninja, which explains why I could hear him as well. Apparently, Dan made a pitstop at a church along the way. I guess he had to see a man about a horse. I know that feeling all too well. Just two more weeks until race day. I'm excited and a little nervous, but I feel like I've put in the necessary training to finish this thing. Time will tell if I'm right.

Time To Taper
After a long 13 weeks of building up, up, up, it's time to taper off and rest the aching muscles. I had school on Saturday, so my final long run had to be late. Dave had other things going on in the evening and Dan was over at Paul's house, so I ran alone. There are parts of running alone that I like a lot better, but in general I prefer company. I do like listening to my book. Born To Run is excellent. There are parts in there that inspire me to go faster and parts that make me want to never run again. I'm only about 5 hours into it, but I really like it. I went 13, and really felt pretty good until mile 11. I made the rookie mistake of running on the same side of the street the entire time, which means my right leg was constantly hitting higher ground than my left. It didn't even bother me until some pain developed in my right knee. I moved to the other side of the road, which immediately helped, and finished the final two miles. I ran two 4.5 mile laps and another 4. I kept my water in the back of my truck out on the street, so I wouldn't have to stop very long to hydrate and grab a slice of bread. I didn't have any Jelly Beans or Gummies, so I used Skittles to push me to the end.
I'm really not sure what to do for food the night before the race, or the morning of the race. We get to Las Vegas at about 5:30 on Friday and have close to a 3 hour drive to Death Valley. I'm sure we can load up on Gatorade and gels in Vegas and hopefully we can find an Olive Garden or something to do one final carb load. Maybe we can buy some good bread and peanut butter and honey at the store and have that before the race. This week will probably be two 5 mile runs and an 8-10 miler on Saturday...nice and easy.

A Quick Four
I got home from work late last night and I had to go to school, so I only had time to run 4 miles. I was planning on running 8 and taking my time to try and work out some kinks from the 20 miles last Saturday, but I had to be at my study group in less than an hour. I decided to push a little and get 4 miles in. I stayed under a 10 minute pace the entire time. There was one stoplight that slowed me for a minute or so, but I felt good and my muscles/joints didn't hurt too bad. My running gear wasn't washed yet, so I wore a pair of sweatpants and my Icebreaker top with a thin pullover and my ski mask. I was plenty warm. I didn't look very ninja, but the ski mask probably made me look like a potential threat to anyone who saw me. My bright green suspenders probably told everyone that I was just out running, but you never know.

Not Another Step
After not completing my 18 miles on New Year's Day I decided to rest my aching body all week and run 20 on Saturday. It felt good to rest my knees and feet, but I'm not sure it helped all that much after about mile 12. Dan and Dave ran with me. We probably looked pretty intimidating (or goofy) running in a pack like we did to start off. We were all pretty much dressed like ninjas, but it was it was early and everyone could see us...at least they thought they could. (You never really know with ninjas.) It was a pretty cold day and very overcast. Dan and I spent our morning tearing out a wall and some hardwood floor at my house. I figured it was a good way to loosen up the muscles. I'm sure it burned some energy, but I don't think it really affected my running. The next morning my hands hurt from swinging the hammer for 4 hours, but it really was no big deal. Breathing all the concrete dust may have been a small hinderance, but the air outside was worse anyway, so no big deal again.
We started at about 3:00 and did a quick 6 mile loop to get some miles under our belts. We moved along a little faster than I am used to for that long of a distance, but Dan and Dave just naturally run lots faster. I felt really good after 6. It was still cold enough that breathing was a problem, but my new Icebreaker long underwear kept me toasty. I actually had to open up my jacket to cool off several times. At 12 miles my body started shutting down. Dave and Dan went on faster than I could go. I kept thinking to myself, "just make it to the truck." Or, "just make it to Dave's house." Having something to drink every two miles really helped a lot. At Mile 16 I had to make a pit stop at Dave's house to talk to a man about a mule. What a disaster that would be during the race. Hopefully, there will be pitstops along the way to do your business. Needless to say, by the time I was back on the road I was about 15 minutes behind them. I pushed hard to keep going, but the final 4 miles were brutal. After the run I grabbed my stuff from Dave's house and limped home.
We didn't have any ice and there was no way I could have driven to 711 to get some, so I took a hot bath (with Charlotte's Princess bubbles) and tried not to slip into a coma. Some people say that if you can get through 20 you can get through the full marathon. However, I have a friend who has completed a bunch of marathons that tells me I won't believe the stuff I see around mile 20. People will be puking their guts out, laying down to rest, crying...apparently, it is not a pretty sight. Most likely, by the time I make it to mile 20, all of those people will be cleared out.
We started at about 3:00 and did a quick 6 mile loop to get some miles under our belts. We moved along a little faster than I am used to for that long of a distance, but Dan and Dave just naturally run lots faster. I felt really good after 6. It was still cold enough that breathing was a problem, but my new Icebreaker long underwear kept me toasty. I actually had to open up my jacket to cool off several times. At 12 miles my body started shutting down. Dave and Dan went on faster than I could go. I kept thinking to myself, "just make it to the truck." Or, "just make it to Dave's house." Having something to drink every two miles really helped a lot. At Mile 16 I had to make a pit stop at Dave's house to talk to a man about a mule. What a disaster that would be during the race. Hopefully, there will be pitstops along the way to do your business. Needless to say, by the time I was back on the road I was about 15 minutes behind them. I pushed hard to keep going, but the final 4 miles were brutal. After the run I grabbed my stuff from Dave's house and limped home.
We didn't have any ice and there was no way I could have driven to 711 to get some, so I took a hot bath (with Charlotte's Princess bubbles) and tried not to slip into a coma. Some people say that if you can get through 20 you can get through the full marathon. Happy New Year
No better way to kick off the new year than with a nice long run. Driving home Friday night, the outdoor temperature reading on the dashboard read 1 degree. It did warm up to 3 degrees by the time we got to Murray, but suffice it to say that it was very cold. The good news is the sun came out and it was a gorgeous day at 11:00 on Saturday morning when I started my run. My new CW-X tights had a small tear in them, so I need to take them back, which means I was back to wearing my old tights. By the time I left for my run it was all the way up to 16 degrees. My lungs hurt so bad the first mile or so, but they didn't bother me after that. I ran the first 4 miles in just over 40 minutes, but I think I rested too long while refueling. Starting mile 5, my left knee was pretty much done. It hurt a little throughout the week, but this was pretty bad. I walked for a little bit, then gutted out another 8 miles, but I couldn't finish the 18 I had scheduled. It feels a little better today, I stayed about 20 minutes in the ice bath last night, which helped a ton. I will probably only run twice this week and give my knee a few extra days to recover.
I just started listening to Born To Run and the first part of the book talks about all the reasons running is bad for your body. I was listening to this guy go on about how every step jars your knees and ankles with 4 times your body weight. I was feeling every ounce of the 800 pounds on my left knee. I've got to get further into the book though so I can hear why it is still ok to run. Right now everything he said makes me never want to run again.
The sun being out yesterday was really nice. Salt Lake is really a beautiful place to run. The mountains look so cool during the winter time. If only I could get the temperature to warm up to about 40 degrees with the sun shining, I'd be fine.
